Celebrating fifty years of Malibu down under

Text Box: In 1956 a group of American Lifeguards were invited to Australia to participate in a surf paddling contest to be held during the Melbourne Olympic Games. Greg Noll, Tommy Zahn, Mike Bright, Bobby Moore and Bob Burnside came with a new type of surfboard.

This was a light weight balsa Malibu board not seen in Australia. The local guys could not wait to give these a try so it wasn’t long before production started on this new board.

‘This was the start of a new era in surfing down under’.
